Fuel Saver Tips:
Gas engines; Fuel your vehicle late night or early morning or when the temperature is the coolest. Remember, gasoline is sold by volume (gallon), not by weight. The warmer gasoline is the more it expands, a pound of warm gasoline takes up more space (or volume) than a pound of cold gasoline. You get more weight and energy when gasoline is cold when you purchase it. The ideal scenario is if it is winter and a gasoline truck has just delivered some very cold gasoline, making the cold gasoline in the gas station's tanks even colder. If it warms up and expands after it is in your RV or vehicle, its OK, because you bought it when it was more dense. You get the benefit of the free gasoline.
Driving habits: all engines: Gradual acceleration will save you fuel over maximum acceleration. When cresting a grade, do not accelerate until you are over the top...back off the throttle and maintain your speed until you clear the top of the hill and gravity assists your speed increase. Stay focused on your driving and look ahead so you are not surprised by traffic or road conditions. If it is obvious that you will need to slow down because a green light ahead is sure to turn red soon....back off the throttle instead of applying your brakes at the last minute.Get the manufacturer's specification on your particular powertrain's "sweet spot". Don't guess. Find out the most efficient engine rpm to operate your Motorhome or travel trailer/power unit combination based on your particular engine, transmission, axle ratio, and tire size; then operate your camper with this rpm as your goal.
Vehicle configuration: Reduce wind drag as much as you can simply by using common sense. Don't add after market components that increase drag by projecting out into the windstream. Don't load your vehicle in a manner that has objects creating more wind drag. Keep it as sleek and clean as you can.
Selecting a power unit (tow vehicle)for your trailer: Buy what you prefer, but remember some basics. Especially if your buying a used power unit that you will use for multiple duties. Pickup Vs Full size van. A four door pickup truck with a 6ft bed is very popular...but what is more versatile and more fuel efficient ? A full size van has air flow over it and under it without turbulence being created like a pickup cab creates. It seats as many or more people than a four door pickup truck. A full size van usually has a higher towing capacity. The rear bumper and trailer hitch are usually closer to the rear wheels than on a pickup, thus less squatting. The roofline and sides of a van extend the full length of the vehicle, the travel trailer behind it doesn't experience as much wind drag or turbulence as it does behind a pickup truck. Already have a pickup and don't want to switch ? Put an aerodynamic cap on the bed.
